As part of Navnirmiti’s ongoing work to make mathematics meaningful and experience-based, a Math Fair was organised at Rosary Primary & High School, Navelim, Madgaon, Goa. The fair was held over three days on 11th, 12th, and 13th November 2025 and focused on primary school students. Schools from across the region were invited, with participation from students and teachers of over 30 schools.
Math Fairs have been a part of Navnirmiti’s educational work since 2012, organised in collaboration with BMC and TMC schools. These fairs are designed as learning spaces where children actively engage with mathematical ideas through models, tools, games, and explanations, rather than encountering mathematics only through textbooks and written exercises. The emphasis has consistently been on helping children articulate their thinking and build understanding through interaction.
Alongside Math Fairs, teacher training workshops are an important part of Navnirmiti’s work. In this context, Navnirmiti conducted a three-day training workshop for primary teachers in Goa towards the end of June 2025, focusing on activity-based approaches to mathematics and moving away from rote learning practices. Drawing from this training and from Navnirmiti’s experience of conducting Math Fairs over the years, Rosary Primary & High School planned and organised the Math Fair at a large scale. While the school took ownership of the planning and execution, the conceptual framework, activity ideas, models, and tools used during the fair were aligned with Navnirmiti’s approach to mathematics learning.
During the Math Fair, students themselves presented mathematical concepts to visiting children, teachers, and other participants. Using three-dimensional models and activity-based materials, children explained basic functions, calculations, and ideas in ways that were age-appropriate and easy to engage with. The fair was organised grade-wise and concept-wise, allowing children to explore mathematical ideas in depth and communicate their understanding with confidence.
Overall, the Math Fair at Rosary Primary & High School stood as a meaningful example of how schools, supported through knowledge partnerships and teacher training, can create rich learning spaces where mathematics is explored, shared, and enjoyed by children.
